'He believes that he is entitled to bring [his dog] here': 22-year-old apartment owner disallows her boyfriend from bringing his dog to move in with them because of her cat, telling him that it's either he agrees or they break up

Pets are deal breakers in relationships, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. "Oh, it'll work out." No, it won't. If you didn't talk about your pets beforehand, if there wasn't some kind of preparation and discussion of the possibility of living together with your pets, then this is something that is bound to blow up in your face.

We have seen it time and time again. Boundaries being crossed over things that may seem small but in reality aren't. Like when girlfriends refuse to leave their dogs alone for any length of time at all. Or when boyfriends suddenly don't allow dogs on furniture, even though that was never brought up before, all the way to a man giving his girlfriend's dog up for adoption behind her back, solely because he was sick of the dog. So, we suppose that it's actually a good thing that the couple in this story figured out they are incompatible so early on.

Look, there are some people out there who are simply… incompatible. And sad as it may be for the people involved, at the end of the day, the sooner you figure it out, the better. This is why we think most people should live together before getting married. You only really get to know someone once you live with them, which is exactly what this couple found out.

Maybe the boyfriend is being entitled here, thinking that his dog should be allowed to live there right away, but there is also something to be said about the girlfriend setting rules and expecting them to be followed because it's “her house”. That may be true, but you're inviting him to live there, making it his home too, and that means that compromises have to be made. But since that cannot seem to happen here, from either side, we think ending it might be the easiest solution.
